Australian children’s author, Andy Griffiths and illustrator, Terry Denton cleaned up at the Australian Book Industry Awards early this year. Griffiths’ and Denton’s book The 52-Storey Treehouse took home the Book of the Year Award – the first time in the 15 year history of these Awards that a children’s book has won the top prize.
The duo also took the prize for the Best Book for Younger Children (0 to 8 years), receiving praise for its “huge impact on encouraging young children to read, particularly boys”.
“It means so much to me to see children’s writing recognised,” Griffiths said. “And not just children’s writing but also really stupid absurd fiction that I never thought, never wanted, to be taken seriously…I’m very happy to accept this award on behalf of all those kids.”
